As the summer starts to *heat* up, I thought I would share some updates of what I have been doing. Back in May, I was honored to give the World Premiere of Jenna Wright's new multi-percussion solo "Pathways" at the National Conference on Percussion Pedagogy. It is a splendid work that will be available VERY soon, so be on the look out! Special thanks to Lisa Rogers, Chal Ragsdale, and the NCPP leadership for being such wonderful hosts and facilitators.
I also just finished doing a recording session with Ryan Anthony, Principal Trumpet of the Dallas Symphony. Such a phenomenal performer and artist! The session was an absolute blast! More updates to come in the not-too-distant future. Until then! I just got back from performing with the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra, where I got to play taxi horns in George Gershwin's "An American in Paris." I had a wonderful time performing with such wonderful musicians! I have also presented my multi-percussion clinic at the University of Texas at Tyler and the University of Texas at Arlington. I am grateful to Professor Corey Robinson and Dr. Andrew Eldridge and Professor Jacob Garcia for letting me visit. As always, a special thanks to Vic Firth and Black Swamp for all of their support!! On April 20th, I will be presenting my clinic at the University of Arkansas at Ft. Smith. Many thanks to Dr. Tommy Dobbs for having me over! I am particularly excited for this one because this will be the first clinic that I get to play Jenna Wright's new multi-percussion solo!! Jenna is a very good friend of mine, and she has written a truly awesome work. I can't wait to share it with the masses!
I'm happy to announce that I have joined the Black Swamp Percussion family as a member of their Educator Network. Percussionists and other musical arts know that it is important to endorse companies that make products that they use and believe in. I use their products, and I can say with full confidence that I believe in the company and its mission. In addition, their commitment to education and constantly finding new ways to reach students and teachers alike within the ever growing digital world of percussion pedagogy gives me great enthusiasm to be associated with this company. Thank you, Tim Church and everyone at Black Swamp, for this opportunity!
Hope everyone is enjoying their time off. I certainly am. While I am taking the time to recharge, I am setting the foundations for things to come in the spring.
In addition to getting ready for another semester teaching at North Central Texas College and in the Little Elm Independent School District, I will be traveling to Amarillo in early January to play Principal Timpani with the Symphony again. Additionally, my good friend Jenna Wright is writing a new piece for me orchestrated for multi-percussion and electronics. From what she has told me about the piece, it is most definitely going to be FUN! Can't wait! In March, I will be presenting my research topic of Kevin Volans' multiple percussion solos at the College Music Society South Central Chapter Conference in Oklahoma. It's a topic I've enjoyed researching, and I look forward to sharing it with more people. Hope you all have a Happy New Year, and that 2018 will be everyone's best year yet! I am happy to say that my Final Dissertation on Kevin Volans' multiple percussion solos has been successfully defended! I am so grateful to all the teachers, students, and members of my family for helping me and supporting me throughout this final milestone in my DMA. Below is the YouTube link to the lecture on my dissertation - hope you enjoy! I had a great time giving a clinic on snare drum at Texas Woman's University last night. Many thanks to Jacob Garcia for having me out to work with the students and to Neil Larrivee and Christian Lyman at Vic Firth for their wonderful support!
I am very excited to announce that I have been selected to serve on the Contest and Audition Procedures Committee for the Percussive Arts Society (PAS)! PAS and their wonderful resources have been crucial in my development as a percussionist and as a musician. I am extremely honored to serve in this capacity.
I was recently featured on VicFirth.com, performing "Kím" by Áskell Másson. I am very honored to be a member the Vic family; their commitment to high quality products and percussion education has truly made our field a better place for many years to come. You can check out the performance below - hope you enjoy!
On April 7th, I finished my 3rd and final DMA recital at the University of North Texas. It was a true honor and privilege to share this music with people. I have uploaded the videos of my recital to my YouTube channel. You can find a link to it under the "Contact" section of this site. Hope you all enjoy - until next time!
